According to many, the key to magical cooking and/or baking starts with cannabutter: Butter that’s been melted and infiltrated with activated cannabis. You can bake and cook to your heart’s delight with marijuana-infused butter by using it in a variety of recipes – from classic, delectable fudgy pot brownies to the best spaghetti sauce you’ve ever had. If you want to keep aside some of the good stuff, you’re in luck, as cannabutter can be frozen for up to six months.
Tools & Ingredients for Making Cannabutter
In order to make cannabis butter at home requires a few tools and ingredients, some of which you might already have lying around the house or kitchen, while a few other items may be worth stocking up on.
For the scientific part of the process (explained in more detail below) you will need;
- 1 gram of quality cannabis top shelf bud
- Baking sheet
- Scissors (If you need to cut with scissors!)
- Spoon (Wooden, preferably)
For making the Cannabutter itself, you need;
- Unsalted butter of which the amount depends on your personal desire. Using 250g of butter is a good starter.
- 1/4 cup water
- Small saucepan
- Candy thermometer
- Fine mesh strainer
- Storage containers that are food-friendly
2. Use Top-shelf Cannabis if Possible
Any type of chef will tell you that ingredients really do matter, but the quality of the ingredients even more so. If you’re going to be using rediscovered weed of the 1980’s, then expect crappy butter. If you’re using high-quality weed straight from a dispensary, it will have a great and beneficial impact on the potency and flavour of your cannabutter.
We don’t really recommend the trim or shake form cannabis plants, as this will cause a bitterness that you don’t really want. Rather use top notch flower. You can also opt to use hash, or hashish, or grinder kief. But to keep it simple, you can simply start with one gram of quality cannabis flower.
3. Prepare your THC’s and CBD’s
In its raw form, cannabis is non-psychoactive, which means it contains cannabinoids THCA and CBDA. You might not have known this – but you need to convert the THCA to THC (and CBDA to CBD. Luckily, to do this, all you need is a little heat, patience and time. This process is scientifically called decarboxylation.
To further explain, when you light a joint or burn a bong, you are actually decarboxylating the weed, which sets the magic in motion and kickstarts the decarboxylation process. Remember, that the higher the heat, the faster the reaction will be. So, when making cannabis-infused butter at home, be sure to not use high heat or too much heat, as this will unwantedly create the unwanted bitter taste of scorched popcorn.
Using an over is the most efficient manner to turn your THC’s and CBD’s into active ingredients. Follow the steps below for best results:
- Preheat the oven to 245°F.
- Break the flower into smaller pieces
- Spread the broken-up flowers on a parchment-lined sheet pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
- After 20 minutes, roughly seventy percent of the THCA will be converted to THC; after 30 minutes, 80 percent.
- Remove the sheet pan from the oven and let the flowers cool at room temperature.
- Finally, grind the decarboxylated, cooled cannabis flowers using a grinder. The final texture should be similar to coffee, not espresso – which is too fine.

- Time to Infuse the Butter
Choosing high-quality weed is important for making awesome butter, but do not underestimate the power in choosing the type of butter! We like to use good unsalted butter. There’s no need to pay top-dollar for butter, but a high-fat, European-style unsalted butter will do the needed tricks. Moving along to the actual infusion process… Many cannabutter recipes tend to go a bit overboard at this stage.
Most require a long steep of the already-decarboxylated weed in the butter, somewhere in the range of three to four hours. This ensures the infusion of the fat with the cannabinoids, while also pulling the chlorophyll and other unwanted flavours from the weed. An experiment revealed that 80 to 90 percent of cannabinoids (that’s THC and CBD combined) infused completely in the butter after about an hour.
Here’s How to Infuse Regular Butter with Cannabis on a Stovetop:
- To a small saucepan, add your decarboxylated, ground weed, the amount of butter in your recipe, plus 1/4 cup of water (this helps replace the water that will evaporate).
- Heat at a low simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, using your candy thermometer to make sure the temperature does not exceed 190°F.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a food-safe container.
- Cover and let the butter set in the fridge, then pour off any remaining water
Use it or lose it!
Now that your cannabis butter is ready to use, it’s wise to note that the shelf life is shorter than regular butter – about one to two weeks if tightly stored. So, be sure to bake or cook with it (using the same amount of butter stated in the recipe) as soon as possible. You can also freeze your cannabis butter batch for up to six months. You can likewise and quite cleverly, keep a log of infused butter cookie dough in the freezer, and slice off one cookie’s worth of dough to bake before bedtime every night.
