Table of Contents

We based our ranking on a wide-ranging analysis of both the product and the company that sells it. We scrutinized everything from potency and price to customer service and company transparency. All that information is laid out below.

And if you’re looking for more general information about CBD and CBD gummies, we’ve got that too! You’ll find sections that give you the scoop on CBD and its legal status, as well as particular information about CBD gummies.

That’s a lot to cover, so feel free to jump around, using the links below to locate what you’re most interested in:

Our Methodology

To find the best CBD gummies, we started with an exhaustive list of every CBD gummy manufacturer we could find. We then narrowed that number down to a mix of both new and more established companies, including those getting some buzz from consumers in online forums.

Once we had narrowed our list to a manageable number, we began the testing process.

Third-party Lab Testing

We sent samples of gummies to a third-party lab for cannabinoid potency analysis to make sure companies were labeling their products accurately.

Any company that had less than 20 percent of the labeled CBD was immediately excluded from the ranking.

Product Quality Evaluation

Of course, gummies should also taste good, so while the potency testing was taking place, our team performed blind product testing. Samples were placed in identical containers and labeled by number. We then took notes on taste and texture, noting anything that was either particularly wonderful or just not quite right.

(Yes, taste-testing CBD gummy bears is a tough job, but we took one for the team.)

We asked questions about hemp source and growing practices, as well as manufacturing practices. Specifically, we wanted to know if the gummy was coated or infused with CBD since an infused product has a longer shelf life.

User Experience

We also evaluated the customer experience. This involved going through websites with a fine-toothed comb, looking for accurate, helpful information (like third-party lab tests) and a frictionless shopping and purchasing process.

Customer Service

But we didn’t stop with websites. Our team also contacted companies’ customer service reps to get a sense of how long it takes to get a response, as well as how thorough and helpful the responses were.

Obviously, we take our CBD gummies very seriously. And we’re confident that our ranking includes some of the best you’ll find.

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of over a hundred cannabinoids (naturally occurring chemicals) that are found in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids work by interacting with receptors found throughout your body, in what is known as the endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system helps support a variety of functions within our bodies. Broadly speaking, its job is to maintain balance. Cannabinoids like CBD, which come from plants, closely resemble those our body creates, so they work easily within the system. This allows them to support endocannabinoid functions, like regulating mood, sleep, appetite, and pain.

So what does CBD do? We’re in the early stages of scientific research on CBD, but early results are promising. Here’s a non-exhaustive list of some of CBD’s most promising benefits:

  • Reduces inflammation
  • Helps control anxiety
  • Provides pain relief
  • Reduces seizures
  • Helps maintain wake/sleep cycles
  • Provides neuroprotection
  • Powerful antioxidant
  • May fight the spread of cancer cells

CBD can be vaped, eaten, taken topically, under your tongue, or pretty much any route you can imagine. But however you choose to take CBD, one thing doesn’t change – it won’t make you high.

And in terms of side effects, CBD has a good safety profile. Most researchers only report mild to moderate side effects, which might include drowsiness, dry mouth, decreased appetite, and lightheadedness.

Is CBD Legal?

The legal status of CBD in the United States has been in flux for the last several years, but the recent signing of the 2018 Farm Bill has provided some much-needed clarity for the industry and consumers.

The new legislation fully legalized industrial hemp and hemp-derived products (like CBD) and removed it from the DEA’s list of controlled substances. So, at the federal level, CBD extracted from hemp is entirely legal and no longer a controlled substance.

However, state laws vary and are sometimes unclear. The Farm Bill explicitly allows the transport of hemp across state lines, but it’s always a good idea to check up on what your local laws are.  For more specific info, check out our interactive map: Is CBD Legal in Your State?

How to Choose CBD Gummy Bears, Worms, Drops, or Stars

If you’ve ever done a web search for CBD gummy bears, worms, or drops, you’ll know that there’s a lot of variety out there. And we’re not just talking about what animal shape they come in.

Potencies can range from 5 to 25 mg of CBD per gummy up to 50 mg, which is a big difference! You can’t necessarily tell from the size of the gummy, so make sure to read the label or product page for that information.

Another thing to consider is whether the gummy is infused with CBD or coated with it. When CBD is mixed right into the gummy ingredients it has a higher chance of being evenly distributed (for more accurate dosing).

Infused gummies are also better protected from light and fluctuating temperatures. This helps the CBD to remain potent, rather than degrading while it sits in a warehouse. Websites may not offer that information, but a customer service rep should be able to tell you about their process.

Why Choose CBD Gummies?

It’s important to note that, despite their deliciousness, there is a downside to the CBD gummy. All CBD edibles have to pass through the digestive system, a process that will break down a lot of the CBD you have swallowed (and, ahem, bought) before it enters your bloodstream.

This means that, compared to taking CBD oil under your tongue, your body will absorb less of the CBD and take longer to feel the effects of it. The upside? Those benefits that you do experience will last longer than a faster acting method.

If you’re experiencing chronic pain or if you take CBD to help you sleep at night, a slower release may be what you’re looking for. But if you’re looking for something fast-acting and with higher bioavailability, you might want to look into CBD oils or vaping.

As with any CBD product, it’s important to make sure that companies have third-party tests to show what they’re putting into their products. Not all companies will have lab tests of the gummies themselves, but they should, at a minimum, have lab results for the CBD extract or isolate they use in their products.
